- There is an Unaired Pilot of the Show
A lot of people do not know this but there is an unaired pilot that was on the verge of release before the show’s co-creator called them all back. This pilot was first directed by “Spotlight” writer – director Tom McCarthy. But it turned out so terrible that they had to reshoot most of the episode. In fact, the show’s co – creator David Benioff was also quoted telling Variety magazine that “We got everything wrong on a very basic level with the writing of it.”
But it was not just the overall bad impression of the episode that made it get retracted. The biggest problem with the episode was it did not convey one very important point. The episode did not make the viewers realize that Jaime and Cersei were brother and sisters. This is a major, major plot point that the episode that failed to establish.
- Peter “Tyrion” Dinklage Thought the Show was Cancelled
The huge fan favorite actor Peter Dinklage who plays the beloved snarky smart – mouthed character of Tyrion Lannister was actually one upped by the creator David Benioff. After the pilot, David pranked Peter by calling him and saying that the show had been a cancellation. It would be six hours before Peter learned the truth! Tyrion might drink, but this time he didn’t know things!
- Sansa Adopted Her Direworlf In Real Life
Sophie Turner, the actress who plays the meek Sansa Stark is actually a really huge fan of dogs in real life as well.
In fact, she got so attached to the ‘Direworlf’ Lady she had on the show for the first season that she adopted him! She decided to name him Zunni and has taken care of it since.
Let us hope that Zunni shares the same fate that Lady did on the show!
- There is a Real-Life Equivalent of Valyrian Steel
What would you do if a White Walker came for you? How would you defend yourself? With a blade made of Valyrian Steel, of course! But while White Walkers might be a phantasmal creation, the concept of Valyrian Steel is very much rooted in reality.
On the show, the greatest of swords like Ice, Oath Keeper and Widow’s Wail are all made from Valyrian Steel; and incredibly strong and hard metal, yet at the same time a metal that is surprisingly light. But there indeed is a material like that in real life, on which Valyrian Steel gets its concept. George R. R. Martin revealed in an interview that Valyrian Steel is based on Damascus steel, an alloy made in India and the Middle – East. What is all the more interesting is that the technique to make both, Damascus Steel as well as Valyrian steel have been lost to the sands of time.
- The Dead Have Risen!
A big difference between the show and the books is the fact that a lot of characters which had died on the show are actually still alive in the books realm! The list of characters who have suffered this fate is Shireen and Stannis Baratheon, Night’s Watchmen Pyp and Grenn, Barristan Selmy, Myrcella Baratheon, and Mance Rayder!
- You Know Nothing, Cast Members!
George R. R. Martin is reported to be quite a character on sets.
In fact, one such incident is where he gathered all the main cast members on the show towards the finale of season 5 and asked all of them one simple question:
“Who is Jon Snow’s mother?”.
After almost 2 hours of guessing debating and discussing, George entered the room again and asked for their answer.
None of them got it right!
- Game of Thrones is the MOST Pirated Show for 4 Years Running
Bit Torrent has reported that Game of Thrones has been named the most illegally downloaded show for four years running! That is right! It has been the most pirated show of 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and the odds are that it will make it 5 years running when this season comes out!
In 2015, it had more than twice the number of illegal downloads of the second most pirated show, The Walking Dead!
Estimates suggest that this has cost the show around 70 million dollars. And something tells us Jack Sparrow has something to do with this. Hmm…

- Charles Dickens and Charlie Chaplain both have relatives on the show- Robb Stark’s late wife was played by Oona Chaplin while Daenerys’s brother Viserys is the great-great-grandson of Charles Dickens! Dragon blood might now have flown through Viserys’ blood, but the blood of a literature master sure does!
- Only 3 people in the world know the ending of Game of Thrones- George R.R. Martin, D.B. Weiss and David Benioff and they aren’t allowed to travel on the same plane in case of an accident.
